Wigan S.T.E.A.M

Ghostly Sounds and Raspberry Pis

We’ve had a fantastic 8 months working with Year 4’s, 5’s and 6’s at The Keys Federation. We’ve worked with over 250 children to learn to create with Scratch, to make music (and haunted house soundtracks!) with Sonic Pi, and to create some jaw dropping animations. The kids have all left with smiles on their faces so we must be doing something right!

Our mission at STEAM is particularly focused on introducing children and young people to the kind of amazing careers that are out there in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, and equipping them with the skills they need to achieve their ambitions…

Here’s what their STEM co-ordinator Joe had to stay about the children’s experiences at STEAM.

“Ever since I first approached Liz and her team last summer, I have been bowled over by just how much passion they have for teaching children how to use the latest and greatest creative technology. We have been so lucky to have Wigan STEAM on our doorstep, providing our children with the very best experiences in coding, animation and graphic design. All for nothing. Liz and her team’s generosity has overwhelmed us all. Just listening to the conversations that the children have with each other on the journey back to school shows how much they love going. Wigan STEAM are very special and have transformed our children’s views on computing, especially coding, and made it cooler than cool in their eyes. We are forever grateful in all that they have given us this year and if the same is offered to us again next year, they will have made several hundred children of Wigan very happy!”
