Wigan goes Manga!

Manga might not be the first thing you think of when you think of Wigan, but for the past two days Wigan S.T.E.A.M has brought the feel of Japan to Wigan with a 2-Day Anime/Japan inspired Film Festival.

“Totoro” and “Spirited Away” were the anime films playing throughout Friday at the Fest…two of my personal favourites. All studio Ghibli films we’ve shown have a moral story and message for the viewers, and the Film Fest’s overall message was to make friends, have fun, and be creative. Here’s our own film critic, Ffion telling us a bit more about these films…

On Saturday, the tone was relaxed and calm with “Ponyo” playing soothingly in one corner and a group of young artists at work with our resident artist, Tony. Tony filled the room with creativity and more Totoro drawings than I’ve seen in my life. Here’s Tony talking a little bit about Manga art…

Everyone was involved in creating the backdrop for the video we made with the green-screen… And we also used the green-screen to take people to scenes and settings in Star Wars, Doctor Who, Minecraft and Studio Ghibli! The S.T.E.A.M Team were also hard at work all weekend, creating green-screen images and videos for you all. Olivia, one of the organisers of the Festival tells us about her own interest in Japanese culture and what activities were happening at it…

At the end of the Festival, with a stomach full of noodles, manga artwork sessions in the bag and heart-warming films in our memories, everyone was happy.

Love, Totoro
